Why a VPN connection: For security reasons, IPMI interfaces are on a protected Private IP address space (RFC-1918). As such, these IP’s are not routable on the internet, and meant only for Private Use.
Being this the case, you need to VPN into our network in order to be able to access your server’s IPMI Interface.
Instructions If you are using a Linux-based computer.
For this tutorial, we will Use an Ubuntu distribution. We will be working from the Command Line Interface (CLI)
1. Installation the OpenVPN Client.
1.1 Open a Terminal and install the client by issuing the following command: sudo apt-get install openvpn
This will install the OpenVPN client on your computer.
After this is complete, you must navigate to the directory where the Generic Profile is downloaded.
Lets assume this file is in the “Downloads” directory.
When you are in the “Downloads” directory, then you must execute the following command: sudo openvpn openvpn generic_profile.ovpn. This assumes the file name is generic_profile.ovpn
You must type your Username and your Password.
NOTE: the screen sill NOT show anything when you type the password, this is normal.
After this is done, you must wait until you see the “Sequence Completed” message in the Command Line Interface.
Once this is done, you are connected to the VPN Server.
IMPORTANT: You must keep the Shell open, if you close it, the VPN session will be terminated. If you face any issues, please feel free to open a ticket with our support department.
